Episode 101
Why Your Symptoms Spike Around Family (And What To Do When They Do)
Show notes
The holidays can feel like the Olympics for your nervous system—and if your symptoms tend to spike around family, you're not alone.
In this episode, Grace explores why your body might still brace for impact around family, even if you've done years of healing work and your relationships aren't "that bad." She explains how your nervous system reacts to old emotional patterns rather than your current reality, and why roles like the peacekeeper, the easy one, or the one who's "too sensitive" can get reactivated during this time.
Grace breaks down the seven F's that fuel symptom flares—Fight, Frustration, Fear, Focus, Fix, Figure it out, and Forlorn—and shares two grounding questions to ask yourself when you're in a high-pain moment. She also offers a reminder: your symptoms aren't a sign you've gone backward. They're just an outdated security system that can be updated.

[00:00:29] our trusted guests so you can feel less alone in your experience and give yourself grace
[00:00:34] no matter what you're going through. So without further ado settle in and get cozy it's time
[00:00:39] to Heal with Grace. Hello hello loves and welcome back to the Heal with Grace podcast.
[00:00:46] We are in the middle of the holiday season. I heard myself right now and I thought
[00:00:51] a ad or some kind of selling point needs to come after that statement. I promise I'm
[00:00:56] not selling you a I don't know gift bag or something. There's a lot going on on the holidays
[00:01:02] right there's so much stimulation there's so much content coming out you're being pushed
[00:01:06] with millions sales family time commitments here around not being able to commit to
[00:01:10] those time commitments there's just like a lot and you might be someone who's
[00:01:17] pain and symptoms spike around this time. So if you're like me in the past I never
[00:01:22] actually connected the dots. I never connected the dots with during this time I
[00:01:28] actually have more pain or have more illness or get sick more often. Now
[00:01:31] obviously like it's the time of year for people to get sick flu and things are
[00:01:35] going around but our neuroplastic symptoms also increased during this time
[00:01:39] and that's what I'm gonna talk about today why that happens and what to do
[00:01:43] with it. So without further ado let's go ahead and dig in. So the holidays
[00:01:48] can kind of be like the Olympics for your nervous system depending on where
[00:01:51] you are in life what's going on your family dynamics how you see the holidays
[00:01:56] some people love them and they get all excited for the season. Some people it
[00:02:01] can be activating because it can feel lonely or maybe you've had a death or
[00:02:06] a trauma around the holidays or a new family member has passed or maybe
[00:02:10] you've gone through a new separation a breakup a divorce something to where
[00:02:14] it doesn't feel the same and those types of feelings when it comes to
[00:02:18] other people whether that's loneliness or rejection sadness feeling out of
[00:02:23] place or overwhelmed whatever it is we often discount the gravity of
[00:02:28] relationships on our nervous system. So just as a little background as being
[00:02:33] human we are literally built to be in a collective place you're literally
[00:02:36] built to be in connection with people with others being alone being
[00:02:41] disconnected can decrease your health mental health physical health all
[00:02:45] things that's why covid was such a very hard time on all of us from a health
[00:02:50] standpoint there are all many different standpoints right many different
[00:02:54] ways because so much of us are isolated and even if you don't recognize it
[00:02:57] in time it can have lasting effects on ourselves. So I say that to really
[00:03:02] just give my heart out to the people that feel the aloneness and this
[00:03:05] time it's not very easy and so I'm highlighting that just to say that
[00:03:11] can be more stressed on your nervous system not to say you're doing
[00:03:15] anything to yourself you need to shame yourself or there's something wrong
[00:03:19] with you or something wrong with your life or your relationships not at all
[00:03:22] it's just to kind of eliminate how much pressure there can be on our mental
[00:03:27] and emotional health when we're feeling this way and we just often
[00:03:30] discount that the impact that relationships or the lack of relationships
[00:03:35] or the difficult kinds of relationships can actually have on our nervous
[00:03:38] systems and the reason for that is because when these difficult
[00:03:41] relationships happen they can bring up feelings of unworthiness of
[00:03:45] rejection feeling like we're broken feeling like we're not good enough all
[00:03:49] of these deeper core beliefs create the stress response because our
[00:03:54] nervous systems in our brain say that's really scary to feel that is so
[00:03:58] way too scary I can't feel that I don't want to feel broken I don't
[00:04:01] want to feel not good enough so instead we're going to become
[00:04:05] dysregulated feel really anxious or depressed or send you a bunch of
[00:04:09] symptoms so you can focus on the physical symptoms instead of these
[00:04:12] bullbeasts that feel really hard and scary deeply scary because it
[00:04:17] threatens your well-being that's heavy and it's the truth so one thing I
[00:04:21] want you to recognize is that your nervous system doesn't react to who
[00:04:25] you are today or who the people around you are today it reacts to the
[00:04:28] patterns it remembers so even if you've done a ton of work even if
[00:04:31] your family isn't quote-unquote that bad and then there's nothing crazy
[00:04:35] about them nothing toxic about them nothing abusive even if you want
[00:04:39] to feel calm and grounded and you don't understand why you can't feel
[00:04:42] that way around your relationships your family the people you're around
[00:04:45] your body is still going into the protection mode based on past
[00:04:49] experiences the second that you start to engage with people or you pack
[00:04:55] your suitcase or you smell something that reminds you of this time or
[00:04:59] your childhood home or see your parents and you might think well
[00:05:04] they're great they're fine they're not that bad but your body
[00:05:08] feels something different your nervous system is reacting off the
[00:05:10] patterns from the past so let's break down exactly why this is
[00:05:14] happening and what it might look like remember that old emotional
[00:05:18] dynamics are automatic stress signals your brain keeps a running
[00:05:23] file called how things usually go their predictions because if
[00:05:27] growing up involved being the peacekeeper managing other people's
[00:05:31] emotions walking on eggshells staying small or easy being the
[00:05:36] easy one being the go with the flow one if it involved adapting to
[00:05:39] unpredictable moods or being parentified meaning you had to be
[00:05:44] the one that was more like the parent than the actual parent you
[00:05:47] have to take care of things manage things or maybe it involved
[00:05:50] being criticized or maybe it involved being dismissed or
[00:05:53] gasoline if you've dealt with any of these things your nervous
[00:05:57] system learned that relationships equals potential
[00:05:59] threat so stay alert which means this time of year can bring
[00:06:04] about things like let's revisit all those formative emotional
[00:06:08] patterns in one room even if nothing is quote unquote bad
[00:06:11] nothing is bad that's happening now your brain reacts to those
[00:06:15] old patterns that I just mentioned because it recognizes
[00:06:18] the environment so this might show up as your symptoms causing
[00:06:23] you to back out of something maybe you start to get a
[00:06:26] migraine before you're even around family maybe you're
[00:06:29] known as the person that ends up getting sick or your pain
[00:06:33] increases and it's unknown as to when it's going to happen
[00:06:36] maybe your family's always like well yeah how's she gonna do
[00:06:39] during this time or if she can be able to come maybe it feels
[00:06:42] like a tight chest fatigue hitting you like a truck maybe
[00:06:46] your digestive issues are just going crazy and you're
[00:06:50] reacting to everything maybe your bladder flares when you
[00:06:53] travel to go see people or just in general you go to a
[00:06:56] holiday party and your bladder is on high alert and you
[00:06:59] have to pee all the time or in so much pain or maybe
[00:07:02] you're in so much sensory overwhelm that your pots ox up
[00:07:05] and it's difficult to confirm and keep your commitments that
[00:07:09] you already said you were going to go to are just feeling
[00:07:12] off and sad or anxious this has nothing to do with you being
[00:07:17] weak not being handled this time not having good mental
[00:07:20] health it's just because your body is bracing and
[00:07:22] protecting you so remember this these symptoms these
[00:07:25] patterns are true protective mechanisms so I really want
[00:07:28] you to see it from a place of thank you thank you thank
[00:07:32] you for helping me now side no if that doesn't feel true and
[00:07:35] you're like why would I think my body for you know giving me
[00:07:39] these painful symptoms again because they are protections
[00:07:43] they are keeping you from something that it feels is
[00:07:46] way more dangerous which is being in connection with
[00:07:48] people that activate you now let me say this too because
[00:07:51] I say this out loud I am not saying these people are
[00:07:53] horrible people I am not saying that oh you should
[00:07:56] never have a relationship with them if they activate you
[00:07:58] if they trigger you then cut them off I'm not saying
[00:08:01] any of that at all because more often than not they're
[00:08:04] probably not doing well I don't really know these people in
[00:08:06] your life but you might not be around people that are I
[00:08:09] don't know horribly toxic or or like abusing you if you
[00:08:12] are then yeah that's a whole other conversation
[00:08:15] definitely take care of yourself find help and support
[00:08:17] but more often than not I hear some difficult family
[00:08:20] dynamics yeah some things that maybe shouldn't be said
[00:08:22] or shouldn't be done but it doesn't mean you can't
[00:08:24] handle it and your body needs to protect you from
[00:08:27] that it means that we need to eliminate these patterns
[00:08:29] these belief systems that are actually happening
[00:08:31] underneath the surface and then give yourself your
[00:08:34] younger self the inner part of you what it actually
[00:08:37] needs which is probably more of love connection
[00:08:40] grace compassion flexibility maybe some boundaries
[00:08:45] because when it comes to relationships we can't
[00:08:48] change the other person we can't actually change the
[00:08:51] dynamic in a relationship unless both people work on it
[00:08:54] so what you can do for yourself is understand some
[00:08:56] of these core beliefs that I just mentioned earlier
[00:08:59] and work on giving those parts of you those younger really
[00:09:02] hurt parts of you what they need that might look like
[00:09:05] giving yourself a hug loving yourself really feeling
[00:09:09] the hard emotional patterns when you're highly anxious
[00:09:12] feeling the fear that's happening during that time
[00:09:15] or the anger that needs to come out side note anger is
[00:09:18] often underneath anxiety even if it doesn't feel
[00:09:21] like that for you there's probably an anger
[00:09:23] component you've never fully addressed and so
[00:09:26] we need to recognize how to feel those things learn to ride
[00:09:30] the wave of those emotions even when they're really scary
[00:09:33] while helping ourselves feel safe in that place
[00:09:37] hey friends it's grace if you feel like you've been doing
[00:09:40] all of the treatment protocols and all the different modalities to heal and
[00:09:43] you're still not feeling better and it's just kind of managing things
[00:09:47] I'm here to talk to you for a second so it's not because you're doing it
[00:09:51] wrong or you just haven't found the answer yet
[00:09:53] it's truly because your nervous system and brain are still operating in
[00:09:57] protection mode and your nervous system and brain
[00:10:01] when it perceives danger physical or emotional danger
[00:10:05] and even just ongoing stress it keeps your body on high alert
[00:10:08] so none of those treatment modalities are actually going to stick or work
[00:10:12] until you work with the bottom line which is your brain and nervous system
[00:10:16] because when you're in the danger mode state your digestion
[00:10:19] immune system hormones and pain signals all get affected
[00:10:22] it's like trying to heal while the alarm bells are still ringing in the background
[00:10:27] and that is why so many people get stuck you can do all of the treatment things
[00:10:32] you want but if your system isn't regulated your
[00:10:35] body can't access its natural healing state
[00:10:38] this is exactly why I created my four month signature program the
[00:10:43] mind-body healing method it's a step-by-step process that
[00:10:46] helps you calm your system rewire old stress patterns and
[00:10:49] retrain your brain to feel safe again so you can finally start to heal for good
[00:10:54] chronic pain and illness this is a true recovery program not just management
[00:10:59] you'll get guided lessons nervous system practices live support
[00:11:03] individual and group support in a community that actually
[00:11:06] understands what you're going through enrollment is now open
[00:11:10] so you can find the link below in the show notes or go to
[00:11:14] elevatetherapywellness.com slash mind-body healing method
[00:11:18] because until your brain and body feel safe no protocol or treatment plan
[00:11:22] will actually work when your nervous system works
[00:11:26] everything starts to heal and just as a side note as
[00:11:30] you're listening to this and you're like well I don't know how to do that I
[00:11:33] don't know how to feel those feelings in a safe way or
[00:11:36] feel them at all like that doesn't even make sense to me or that's really
[00:11:39] scary that is where the work of a therapist or
[00:11:42] coach comes into play we can't always do this on our own
[00:11:45] actually I would say well yeah we can't always do this on our own
[00:11:48] I mean I myself have always had therapists and mentors and coaches and
[00:11:51] still do that really helps me understand how to feel these things and be
[00:11:55] okay with them so I want to say that if you don't fully grasp it or
[00:11:59] get it or understand it you probably need some support or someone to help
[00:12:02] you teach you how yeah okay well with that
[00:12:05] I will say that obviously if you want to find someone in your area in your
[00:12:09] community fantastic if you also want to learn what
[00:12:12] it's like to work with me you can find the links below
[00:12:15] to sign up for a free intro call to work with me in therapy
[00:12:18] where you can sign up for the mind body healing method program which guides you
[00:12:21] through my four-step process to helping you understand how to feel
[00:12:25] more safe in your brain and your nervous system to fully recover from
[00:12:28] symptoms both of those links are below and you
[00:12:30] can DM me to ask me questions of whether you think it's a right fit
[00:12:33] sometimes we don't even have to be home yet or we don't even have to be
[00:12:37] around memories for our symptoms to be triggered
[00:12:41] just the anticipation of something coming up can increase the fear response
[00:12:45] that increases the danger signal in our brain and our symptoms
[00:12:49] what's going on unconsciously or this could be consciously but what's going
[00:12:52] on unconsciously could be like well what if someone comments on my health or
[00:12:56] well what if I have to cancel plans and I disappoint everyone
[00:12:59] or what if they question my food choices or what if they ask about my job
[00:13:03] my relationship my health what do I say
[00:13:06] what if they give me unsolicited wellness advice
[00:13:09] right what if someone tries to talk to me about my issues again
[00:13:12] or what if someone tries to lecture me on mold
[00:13:16] what I should be doing for my nervous system what if I don't have the space
[00:13:18] to rest right a big fear can be well if you are
[00:13:22] going to be around more people and you don't feel like you have
[00:13:25] the space and time to be in your routine and what helps you feel safe
[00:13:29] then the body's gonna feel really afraid you're gonna have more anxiety
[00:13:32] so it kind of goes into this like okay we're preparing for war mode
[00:13:36] which can increase pain and symptoms like fatigue
[00:13:39] tight pelvic floor pain flares nausea urgency racing heart
[00:13:43] hyper fixation on the body high anxiety things like that
[00:13:47] and so when we're in this place of fear as we know it increases the symptoms in
[00:13:52] our bodies I want to talk about two the emotional
[00:13:55] patterns that end up coming up so I mean this time of year can stir up
[00:13:59] as I kind of touched on in the beginning so much grief
[00:14:03] a lot of comparison right like comparing yourself to everyone else around you
[00:14:08] to your family to your friends who might have families that you desire or want
[00:14:12] that look better than yours or maybe you don't have a partner and you're
[00:14:15] really missing someone to be with around this time
[00:14:19] and you're comparing everyone else that looks like they're having all these
[00:14:21] healthy relationships right maybe you feel resentment that you don't have
[00:14:25] that maybe you feel resentment that your health is so
[00:14:28] bad you can't do anything you probably have a lot of unmet needs during
[00:14:32] this time when fear increases and these deeper emotional
[00:14:36] patterns are there we have to look at all right
[00:14:39] this is a high stress time or it can be I don't want to put that out there
[00:14:42] doesn't have to be but it can be right so when there's a high stress time
[00:14:46] we're not going to just look at okay how can we recover from your symptoms
[00:14:49] right now right do all your things so you can
[00:14:52] recover and not have flares I want to put out there that if you're
[00:14:54] having a flare if your symptoms are increasing that's okay
[00:14:58] I mean it's not sucks probably he probably it's like not fun but
[00:15:03] it's normal when you're learning how to recover from pain and illness
[00:15:07] with the mind-body method you're learning how to move through these times
[00:15:12] better you're not looking to heal overnight you're looking to
[00:15:15] recognize when they come up learn to approach yourself
[00:15:19] with so much more kindness and compassion and less fear
[00:15:22] because fear perpetuates more of the symptoms right remember that your
[00:15:26] brain doesn't differentiate between emotional hurt and physical threat
[00:15:31] it just senses activation and moves into protection mode
[00:15:34] and this can create very real physical symptoms as a shield
[00:15:38] so if you've been making progress in your health
[00:15:41] and around this time or in the past month or so
[00:15:45] you've noticed your symptoms increase I don't want you to go
[00:15:48] into a spiral of what did I do wrong why can't I get better
[00:15:52] I'm never gonna get better I'm never gonna do x y and z everything is hopeless
[00:15:57] what am I gonna do I want you instead to turn towards yourself
[00:16:02] give yourself a hug give yourself so much love give yourself so much connection
[00:16:07] and know that you're moving through this and that it's okay to flare it's okay to
[00:16:12] have symptoms it's okay to not be okay sometimes
[00:16:15] I need you to find your version of safety
[00:16:18] within yourself and your body which side note in a couple weeks
[00:16:22] have a feeling one of our most popular episodes are gonna come back around
[00:16:26] how to create safety in your body so stay tuned for context at the end of the
[00:16:29] year I put out the top two episodes of the
[00:16:32] year I replay them and that one has consistently been
[00:16:35] our top performing episodes so stay tuned it might come back out again
[00:16:38] what I mean by creating safety in your body is helping yourself
[00:16:42] be okay when you're not okay except that this is your reality right now
[00:16:46] and you're going to move through it and it's not going to be forever
[00:16:49] meaning when you're in a high pain high symptom day
[00:16:52] that's not your norm right you're not out of 10 out of 10 every
[00:16:56] single day throughout your journey it ebbs and flows it goes through waves
[00:17:00] so when you're in those high states I want you to remember that
[00:17:03] this is not going to last forever this too shall pass I'm working on my
[00:17:07] nervous system I'm working on my regulation I am working on soothing
[00:17:10] and safety you're not going to be perfect at it
[00:17:12] not at all remember when it comes to the holidays that
[00:17:16] you're subconscious braces for the role that you used to play
[00:17:19] even if you've done so much healing work and therapy and mental health
[00:17:23] everything if you've grown and evolved and healed in so many different ways
[00:17:28] that part of you that was activated and really shaped as
[00:17:32] that when you were young might come out again it might be a little bit more
[00:17:35] present it doesn't mean you've gone backwards it
[00:17:37] doesn't mean you've gone you know you've lost all
[00:17:40] healing or all growth it just means that it's more activated right now
[00:17:44] and that's okay you might become a little bit more of the responsible one
[00:17:47] the anxious one the helper the quiet one the overachiever the one who's
[00:17:51] quote-unquote too sensitive or the mediator the kid who's always had stomach
[00:17:56] aches or always had migraines or the one who doesn't rock the boat
[00:17:59] your nervous system prepares for that role not your current reality
[00:18:04] so I want you to remind yourself we've been here before and I know
[00:18:07] how this goes I'm going to take care of myself
[00:18:10] in this time if you are a sensitive or highly sensitive person
[00:18:15] you're probably going to feel a little bit more
[00:18:19] vulnerable right a little bit more shaky and when your system finally pauses to
[00:18:23] recognize this it might feel like it's going into
[00:18:27] straight on protection mode right more of a flare
[00:18:30] more pain more illness more symptoms but just remember that your brain is
[00:18:34] trying to protect you and not punish you and this is the most important
[00:18:37] part because when symptoms spike your brain isn't malfunctioning
[00:18:41] it's doing exactly what it's learned to do it's learning to protect you
[00:18:45] but what we want to help it realize is that you're not eight years old anymore
[00:18:48] you are allowed to have boundaries you're not responsible
[00:18:52] for everyone's happiness you don't need to disappear to keep the peace
[00:18:56] and you actually are safe now you are an adult
[00:18:59] and you have the skills and the tools or at least you are learning the
[00:19:02] skills and the tools to be able to help yourself and speak
[00:19:06] from act from feel from your wise mind self your wise mind adult self
[00:19:11] basically your symptoms your nervous system are just an outdated security
[00:19:14] system so once you learn to update it it will
[00:19:19] respond and then i want to remind you one of the
[00:19:21] tools that i want to send you with is i want to remind you of the
[00:19:25] seven f's that i actually just spoke about in my free video series and
[00:19:29] pain reprocessing therapy calls these the seven f's that fuel symptoms
[00:19:33] so when you're stuck in a flare when you're stuck in pain and
[00:19:35] symptoms i want you to remember these things and watch for them
[00:19:38] because these are the mechanisms that increase the lack of safety in your
[00:19:42] body increases the fear and the danger in your body which increases symptoms
[00:19:45] and so the way to move through high stress
[00:19:49] pain times is through watching for these things and giving yourself more soothing
[00:19:53] and compassion so the seven f's are one fight are you tensing
[00:19:58] resisting trying to battle your symptoms making them go away
[00:20:02] frustration are you feeling defeated or angry that it's happening again
[00:20:07] fear are you bracing for the worst anticipating a flare
[00:20:11] focus are you scanning monitoring checking every sensation always
[00:20:16] hyper fixating on what's happening in your body are you
[00:20:19] trying to fix are you scrambling to go to google chat gbt taking all
[00:20:24] the supplements making a new specialist appointment
[00:20:27] scheduling a new scan are you figuring it out
[00:20:30] over analyzing researching trying to explain or control it
[00:20:34] or are you forlorning collapsing into the hopelessness that you'll never get
[00:20:39] better save this or pause it and write these things
[00:20:42] down i want you to have them available so you can
[00:20:44] recognize when they're showing up pretty much everyone who deals with
[00:20:48] neuroplastic symptoms cycles for these especially during this time
[00:20:52] but when you can name the f's that are happening
[00:20:55] your brain starts to shift out of the automatic survival mode and into
[00:20:58] conscious awareness and when awareness is there
[00:21:01] we can create more safety right we can't change what we're not aware of
[00:21:05] and safety happens when symptoms reduce and we gain the confidence that we can
[00:21:09] do that so next time you're in a high pain high
[00:21:13] stress place i want you to ask yourself what is my brain
[00:21:17] trying to protect me from now this one you may not fully be able to
[00:21:20] recognize right off the bat and that's okay i don't
[00:21:23] want you to get stuck on trying to understand what it's protecting you
[00:21:26] from understanding the deeper pattern you can do that when you're on a
[00:21:30] lower day of your pain and symptoms but if you're in a really
[00:21:34] high state it's really just more about safety and soothing
[00:21:37] and not trying to figure it out and then the i think a great question is
[00:21:40] what would help me feel just two percent safer right now
[00:21:43] what would that look like can i give myself a hug can i go outside and
[00:21:47] breathe in some fresh air can i take some breaths and breathe
[00:21:50] all the way down to the root of my spine
[00:21:54] really filling up my body with safety this is how we interrupt the danger
[00:21:59] loop in real time so if you listen to this and you're like
[00:22:02] yeah great that's helpful but i still don't fully understand how to do this
[00:22:06] you don't have to do it alone actually i highly encourage you not to do it alone
[00:22:10] it's kind of lonely right there's something really incredible about healing
[00:22:14] when you understand the nervous system you understand the brain response
[00:22:19] but then there is an actual support system and clear
[00:22:22] roadmap to help you do that and when you're doing it with people
[00:22:25] surrounding you that are lifting you up seeing you
[00:22:29] in your pain and really acknowledging what you're going through
[00:22:33] who get it who just truly freaking get it because they've been through it too
[00:22:36] that is what i help you do in the mind body healing method
[00:22:39] the mind body healing method is a four month 16 week program
[00:22:43] to help you understand how to heal and get out of your symptoms
[00:22:47] not just manage not just do this over and over and over again every week for
[00:22:51] for the rest of your life to manage your symptoms it's truly how to heal and recover
[00:22:55] i teach you brain training i teach you how to increase safety in your body
[00:22:58] how to understand and soothe your nervous system
[00:23:00] reducing anxiety and reducing your pain and symptoms
[00:23:03] if you want to just go ahead and get that support right now i would highly
[00:23:07] recommend joining by the end of the year because we have a few really
[00:23:10] amazing updates happening during that time with the new updates
[00:23:13] you get two individual sessions within the four months as well so that we
[00:23:16] can really personalize your progress to you
[00:23:19] and help you get unstuck where you might not sure you know what's going on or
[00:23:22] what's happening and then you get our group calls every
[00:23:26] week and community chat support that i'm there and
[00:23:29] there every single day so just remember that you can try all the
[00:23:32] treatments all the protocols all the supplements under the sun but if you're
[00:23:35] still in danger if your nervous system is
[00:23:37] still in high alert none of those things will actually help you
[00:23:40] and that is where the mind body healing method comes into play
[00:23:43] so if you're listening to this thinking like i don't want to repeat
[00:23:46] the same cycles next year i really want to feel better
[00:23:49] it don't want you to go through another holiday where you're bracing for symptoms
[00:23:53] reach out to me email me or dm me or find the link below to figure out if it's
